The UCSD Research Experience for High School Students (REHS) is an eight-week volunteer program at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) designed to expose high school students to computational science and related research fields. Participants work with UCSD mentors on established research projects, learning to formulate and test hypotheses, conduct computational experiments, and draw conclusions. Students gain hands-on experience in data-driven research, software instruction, and scholarly readings, fostering work readiness skills and mentorship from computational research scientists. The program emphasizes teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. At the program's conclusion, students develop and present scientific posters reflecting their summer experience, research, and future career goals at a celebratory event.
Students work on established research projects, engage in software instruction, participate in scholarly readings and discussions with their mentors and graduate student teams, and attend regular lab meetings and group discussions.
The ideal student is a motivated high school student (grades 10-12) at least 16 years old, residing in Southern California, with a minimum 3.0 GPA, who is college-bound and passionate about STEM and computational science.
