About this camp

The UCSD COSMOS Machine Learning: Can We Teach a Computer to Think? cluster offers an intensive four-week residential experience where high school students delve into the fundamentals of machine learning. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on projects, students explore various machine learning algorithms and advance their programming skills, primarily using Python. The curriculum introduces students to the basics of machine learning, including common machine learning packages, and explores applications across diverse fields such as social science, engineering, habitat and animal conservation, medical diagnosis, face detection, recommendation systems, and automatic language translation. Students gain practical experience with techniques like classification (e.g., k-nearest neighbors, logistic regression, decision trees), clustering (e.g., k-Means Clustering), and neural networks. The program culminates in a final research project where students apply their acquired skills to a topic of their choice, presenting their findings to their peers.

What a typical day looks like

A typical weekday involves morning lectures and discussions on STEM topics, followed by afternoon lab sessions or field trips where students apply concepts to real-world problems and projects. Evenings include study time and recreational activities.
