The Advanced Research Experience (ARE) - AI and Machine Learning program at UC San Diego is a fast-paced, five-week summer research experience for high school students. Participants have the unique opportunity to learn and conduct research alongside top researchers from UC San Diego and the University of San Diego. The program is administered by the UC San Diego San Diego Supercomputer Center.
Students will engage with five different research disciplines, with a strong focus on AI and basic machine learning algorithms. The curriculum includes foundational coding skills in Python, analysis of sample data sets using machine learning tools, and prompt engineering on available AI tools. Beyond AI and machine learning, students will explore neuroscience, biophysics, data science and data analytics as it relates to biology and health, and college preparedness. Each week involves an assigned small group final project, culminating in a final research poster for the ARE Research Symposium poster session.
Students work in pairs or small groups, allowing for peer learning and growth, and benefit from 1:1 access to their mentor's expertise. The program aims to provide motivated high school students with an immersive research opportunity, fostering skills in scientific inquiry, data analysis, and presentation.
A typical day involves learning about AI and basic machine learning algorithms, foundational coding skills in Python, and analyzing sample data sets, with specific hours varying by week (e.g., 8:30 AM - 3 PM or 10 AM - 3 PM).
This program is best for motivated high school students (grades 10-12) who are at least 16 years old, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, are college-bound, and are interested in an advanced, fast-paced research experience across various STEM disciplines, particularly AI and machine learning.
